The looming greenhouse effect together with the scarcity of raw materials has made recycling and sustainable development big issues and a real challenge for the coming years.
However, several disposals are still underestimated and dismissed in the recycling process. A case in point is scrap catalytic converters, which contain significant quantities of palladium, platinum, and rhodium; a true precious metals bonanza! PGM’s - platinum, palladium, and rhodium - fulfill an essential role in the functioning of catalytic converters. Indeed, they act as catalysts in the conversion of noxious vehicle emissions into harmless components. Nowadays, almost all countries in the world now legally requiring that all new vehicles contain a catalytic converter. This aims to minimize the negative impact on the environment. As a consequence of this, the demand for these metals has never been higher; a demand that can only increase further as the governments introduce increasingly stringent emission standards at a time when vehicle usage and ownership continue to expand.
All three PGM’s are rare, expensive to mine, and in high demand, and not only from the new vehicle manufacturing industries. Moreover, their mining has a seriously adverse impact on the environment. The mining industry is working hard to respond to rising demand. Indeed, it streamlines and upgrades its production techniques, improves safety standards, and builds closer partnerships with the labor force and local communities. However, new production alone will struggle to meet the demand and will always provoke concern on its environmental impact.
Recycling scrap cats and in general, then, is critical to future automotive production and to environmental protection!
